I had to work on the Friday after........so insisted that Carla go to Shreveport alone for the Holiday. I cooked....and definatly feel sorry for anyone that wasn't at my table.
I had stuffed merlitons, chicken and dressing, greenbeans and potatos, bacon wrapped squash...and......pecan/apple bread.
An easy recipe.
1 grated apple
1/2 cup chopped pecans
Tbsp cinnamen (oops spellin ain't my strong point)
enough sugar to make it sweet
1 cup bisquit mix
milk to make a batter
stir it up, pour it in muffin tins and bake at 350 till it gets done. whipped cream on top when it cools makes it a low cal dessert.......right!

My huge fish pond
I've always admired people that could afford a fish pond...but..I just be po folk. BUT Hazel and O C taught us kids to be creative. This is a pottery planter....free....bout 2 ft long ,1 and a half ft wide and bout that deep. tucked in between the egg plants and radishes and behind the carrot seedlings makes it a joy while pullin weeds. Speaking of "weeds." Since Katrina, Polk Salat is growing in city park. Since all these "high falootin" people don't know what to do with it, this country boy has to take up the slack and pick it. Do you know how to cook Polk Salat?
First of all pick it. Oh, you don't know what it looks like? O.K. as a public service I'll go take some pictures and show you how to cook it. Be watchin for a post called...M..Polk Salat.Maybe even Geneva( my sister) will let me share the recipe for Hot Water Cornbread.
Hanging basket ideas
This year I've discovered that hanging baskets are really flexible how they can be used. Herbs planted in a basket by the door are beautiful and so convenient that one has a tendency to use them more. Fresh basil and oregano added to a "store bought" pasta sauce makes it taste homemade. Add a solar light in a spring basket and you have a great light to line a walk.
Every one needs a gazebo
Andrea's "perch"( is that spelled right, cause she sure don't have any fish in the room) is right beneath this window.
Garden update
I found my first squash this morning,I was so excited I had to take a picture....my first baby of the year
Granny Carla and the princess
Last week-end we went to see the princess. Bryan and Lila thought we went to see them, but.........come on....you know the truth, huh? She was a clown ALL week-end. they tried to make us belive that sometimes she is bad.....RIGHT!
Bryan and Lila cooked a pork roast from the hog Bryan killed....mmmmmmmmm!

I'm sooo lazy
I have to get out my camera and update this site. The garden is filling out so much it is a huge pleasure to be in the garden. We now have a 10x12 gazebo with mosquito screens...complete with a fan and lights. Nancy introduced me to a term,"you could lose a crop sitting here like this."Is she a country girl or what? I even have a fish pond in a large oval flower pot. I am having a war with slugs. I haven't quite decided which to do, meat them or kill them. They aren't quite large enough for escargo( is that spelled right?)Someone told me I could sink baby food jars filled with beer and they go to it, fall in and drown. I guess they drink too much and fall off the bar stool! I guess the next day I could have escargo and beer.
I HAVE DISCOVERED THE NEW ORLEANS FARMERS MARKET! It is absolutly wonderful. It is actually on the internet under, duh, New Orleans Farmers Market. I now have to go every saturday to get my milk, butter ....and....sourdought bread.OH MY GOSH. If heaven is better than that....I guess.....i'll have to make sure I make it! There is, besides fresh produce....everything local. It isn't just a tourist thing. And I ain't tellin the tourist where it is!
Now don't ya think I need to work for the tourist commission?

Vacation day
I was on vacation today....at home....alone. I opened the front door, put a gate across it so Andrea couldn't get out, and enjoyed the early spring. I plan on planting zinnias and sunflowers amongst the lavender and foxglove, but for right now i'm going to eat breakfast.
I am having Lavender tea and an herbal omelet made in the sandwich maker.
Recipe:
One egg(unless you are really hungry)
One green onion (cut up with kitchen sheers)
One strip of bacon ( cut up with kitchen sheers)
Pinch of rosemary( fresh from the garden)
spoonful of bisquit mix
Mix it up and pour it in a sandwich maker....mmmmm
Gotta go plant zinnias and sunflowers.

Welcome to our house
Come on in and have a seat. Would ya want some ice tea, or maybe you'd rather have a coke with Carla. If you catch her when she has time, maybe she'll make you a shrimp and egg gumbo.......and if you're nice she might even give you the recipe. I'll talk about herbs, parrots and of course the queen of the house....Andria
